Hifz & Memorization

How Long Does It Take to Memorize the Whole Quran?

Most full-time students memorize the Quran in 2 to 3 years, while part-time students take 3 to 5 years or more. See how daily targets change the timeline.

Most full-time Hifz students memorize the whole Quran in about 2 to 3 years. Part-time students, who study around school or work, usually take 3 to 5 years or longer. The real answer depends on how many lines you memorise each day, how consistently you study and how well you revise.

The quick maths

The standard Madani Mushaf has about 604 pages, each with 15 lines. That is roughly 9,000 lines. Your daily new lesson (called sabaq) decides your timeline:

New lines per day Study days per week Approximate time
3 lines 5 About 11–12 years
5 lines 5 About 7 years
10 lines (≈ ⅔ page) 5 About 3.5 years
15 lines (1 page) 6 About 2 years

These are estimates for new memorisation only. Real plans also include revision days, holidays and the final full review, so most students add a few months.

What affects how fast you memorize

  • Reading level: students who already read fluently with Tajweed memorise much faster.
  • Consistency: a small daily target done every day beats big targets done occasionally.
  • Revision: without daily review, earlier pages fade and progress slows.
  • Age and routine: children often memorise quickly; adults succeed with a steady routine.
  • A good teacher: regular listening and correction keeps memorisation accurate.

The three parts of a daily Hifz routine

  1. Sabaq: the new lines for today.
  2. Sabqi: revision of the last few days or weeks of lessons.
  3. Manzil: revision of older portions, cycling through everything memorised.

Balancing these three is what makes Hifz last. Our Hifz program sets all three with a teacher listening every day.

Can adults memorize the Quran?

Yes. Adults usually memorise fewer lines per day than full-time students, but they are often very consistent. With 5 lines a day and strong revision, an adult can memorise a Juz in a few months and the whole Quran over several years.

Start with Juz Amma (the 30th Juz). Its short surahs give quick wins and build the habit before longer surahs.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many pages are in the Quran?

The common Madani Mushaf has 604 pages, with 15 lines on most pages.

Can you memorize the Quran in one year?

It is possible for some full-time students memorising 1.5–2 pages a day with very strong revision, but it is demanding. For most students, 2 to 3 years full-time is realistic.

How many hours a day does Hifz take?

Full-time students often study 3–5 hours a day. Part-time students commonly spend 1–2 hours across sabaq, sabqi and manzil.

Which Juz should I memorize first?

Most students begin with Juz Amma (Juz 30) because its surahs are short and used in daily prayer.
